An exhibition on Vivian Maier at the Castle of the Bishops of Luni. There are photos that have never been exhibited in Italy

Until October 14, 2018, it is possible to visit the exhibition 'L'autre Vivian. The other Vivian Maier' at the Tower of the Castle of the Bishops of Luni in Castelnuovo Magra.

L’autre Vivian. The Other Vivian Ma ier is the exhibition dedicated to photographer Vivian Maier set up, from June 1 until October 14, 2018, in the six floors of the Tower of the Castle of the Bishops of Luni in Castelnuovo Magra (province of La Spezia).Curated by Roberto Carlone and Caterina Cavallari, the exhibition showcases fifty of the author’s photographs, some from a private collection and never exhibited in Italy, taken during her stay in Champsaur, France, where she embraced her French origins (on her mother’s side).

Vivian was a self-taught photographer who, with her predominantly black-and-white photos, made stories of ordinary lives captured in their depth and essential truth through simple snapshots. The exhibition is made possible thanks to the Archivi della Resistenza association of Fosdinovo(Massa and Carrara) in collaboration with the French association "Vivian Maier et le Champsaur," which collects evidence of Vivian Maier’s relationship with France.

“Opening these exhibitions is a special emotion every time,” Mayor Daniele Montebello stressed, “they have taken an important direction that sees us involved as an administration but in close collaboration with associations, volunteers and artists. It is not a pre-packaged ’package’ but something that from time to time is designed and studied for uncommon but fascinating exhibition spaces. Thanks to the now well-established understanding with Archivi della Resistenza and with the collaboration of the transalpine association and especially the curators Roberto Carlone and Caterina Cavallari, we were able to set up an exciting itinerary that portrays Vivian Maier in her French period as few have seen her.”

“Vivian was a real photographer,” Carlone pointed out, “not the quirky person that has often been portrayed. She immortalized ordinary people, establishing a very strong relationship with them. This is a journey inside her fantasies and marks, an exhibition to be visited by yourself as she posed with the subjects of her photographs. Most of those on display were printed by her in the darkroom; she was self-taught but always ’breathed’ this art.”
Meetings, screenings, workshops, performances and conferences will accompany the exhibition.
