From June 28 to November 30, 2019, the exhibition Unseen Renaissance. Lunigiana between the 15th and 16th centuries is on view at the Diocesan Museum in Massa. The exhibition takes its cue from the restoration of an important work for the city of Massa, the St. Elizabeth Altarpiece by Bernardino del Castelletto, a Lombard painter who was active for many years in Lunigiana: the work is preserved precisely at the Museo Diocesano in Massa. The restoration provided an opportunity to reconstruct the context in which the activity of the artist, who kept his workshop in Massa in the last quarter of the 15th century, developed.
The exhibition itinerary, divided into various sections, presents, alongside sculptures, paintings, works of goldsmithing and precious textiles from the diocesan territory, a section dedicated to the important transition from manuscript to printed text, which constitutes a focal moment in the development of Renaissance culture, carried out in collaboration with the historical archives and libraries of the Diocese. The research and staging of the exhibition saw the collaboration of the Department of Civilization and Forms of Knowledge of the University of Pisa, as part of the TRAME Project, and also involved local schools: a class from the Liceo artistico Felice Palma, produced, in the context of an alternating school-work project, the apparatus for a section dedicated to goldsmithing.
On the occasion of Renaissance Unseen, the Diocesan Museum will also host many other initiatives throughout the year, also in collaboration with other institutions in the area, to enhance what remains of Renaissance culture in Massa and Lunigiana. The exhibition during the summer will maintain the following hours: Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to midnight, Fridays from 6 p.m. to midnight. Every Friday, at 6:30 p.m., the curators of the different sections of the exhibition will accompany the public to discover some aspects of the itinerary. Reservations are required to participate in the tours. The full program is available at www.beniculturalimassacarrarapontremoli.it, where there is also more information about the museum and the exhibition. Information is also available by calling 0585 499241.
