An exhibition on Giambattista Piranesi and the dream of classicism in Pesaro

The exhibition Giambattista Piranesi. The Dream of Classicism, from December 8, 2017 to April 8, 2018 at the Civic Museums of Palazzo Mosca.

The exhibition Giambattista Piranesi. The Dream of Classicism, running from Dec. 8, 2017, to April 8, 2018, and dedicated to the genius of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, also known as Giambattista (Mogliano Veneto, 1720 - Rome, 1778), engraver, architect and architectural theorist. The exhibition brings to the Marche region about 70 graphic works from three series of Piranesi’s engravings, one dedicated to prisons, one to views and one to the antiquities of Rome: the purpose of the exhibition is to retrace, as the presentation states, “the neoclassical dream of the artist fascinated by the grandeur of the ancient past, between magnificence and the feeling of the sublime.”

The installation intends to establish dialogues between Piranesi’s engravings and works from the permanent collection, many of which are part of the 19th-century legacy of Marchesa Vittoria Mosca. The first section is reserved for Prisons (1761-1770), the daring visions of prisons depicted with large spaces, vaults, and labyrinths, then the visitor will encounter views of Rome (1740-1760) and Roman Antiquities (1757) that testify to Piranesi’s strong interest in classicism. At the end of the tour, a video will show the public 3-D reconstructions of Piranesi’s prisons: the project was created by Gregoire Dupont of Atelier Factum Arte in Madrid using a stereolithographic process.
