An exhibition on Francesco Arcangeli at the Archiginnasio in Bologna, 50 years after the death of the famous critic

To mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Bolognese art critic and historian Francesco Arcangeli, the Archiginnasio Library in Bologna is dedicating an exhibition to him. November 15, 2023 to February 14, 2024.

From Nov. 15, 2023, to Feb. 14, 2024, the exhibition Francesco Arcangeli: The Provinces of Art, curated by Marco Antonio Bazzocchi and Filippo Milani, professors at the University of Bologna, will be on display in the spaces of the Upper Quadriloggiato of the Archiginnasio Library in Bologna, created on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of the Bolognese art critic and historian Francesco Arcangeli (Bologna, July 10, 1915 - Feb. 14, 1974).

The exhibition displays a number of documents preserved in the archival and book collection of brothers Angelo, Gaetano, Bianca and Francesco Arcangeli kept at the Archiginnasio Library since 2007. The selected documents testify not only to the breadth of Arcangeli’s interests in art-history, but also in literature, emphasizing his relationship with the “province,” particularly Emilia.

A common thread among the ten showcases of which the exhibition is composed, each dedicated to an artist or an artistic current, following the main junctures in the development of Arcangeli’s critical thought, is the concept of tramando, which characterizes all of Arcangeli’s art-historical research: from his passion for poetry to his encounter with the Impressionists; from his closeness to informal art, particularly his friend Morlotti, to Romantic aesthetics; from Wiligelmo to Morandi, passing through Bastianino and Tasso, the Carraccis, Aspertini, Crespi, Fontanesi and Pascoli. The materials on display are accompanied by poetic texts by authors who are part of the Archangels’ library (Giacomo Leopardi, Arthur Rimbaud, Giovanni Pascoli, T. S. Eliot, Eugenio Montale, Dylan Thomas).
