From April 15 to September 25, 2022, the National Galleries of Ancient Art at Palazzo Barberini in Rome present the exhibition Disney. The Timeless Art of Storytelling, curated by the Walt Disney Animation Research Library, with the collaboration of historian and critic of comics and animation cinema Federico Fiecconi, and promoted and produced by 24 ORE Cultura-Gruppo 24 ORE.
The exhibition aims to tell the story of Walt Disney’s masterpieces by tracing the stories back to the ancient matrices of epic tradition: for centuries, myths, medieval legends and folklore, fairy tales and fables have constituted the narrative heritage of the world’s diverse cultures. From these traditions derive the most famous stories from which Disney films have been made, and here they are presented in a narrative key through the display of preparatory sketches focusing on characters, settings and narrative plots. Indeed, the ancient fairy tales have been revitalized, implementing their universal value, through the skill of Disney’s artists using various tools, from hand drawing to digital animation.
The audience will have the opportunity to go through thewhole creative process behind the scenes of a Disney tale and to walk through the exhibition halls not only as a passive spectator, but as a protagonist actor of the content. Through interactive stations and a layout intended to evoke the settings of Disney’s great animation masterpieces, the tour will provide the tools of the storyteller. Room after room each visitor will be able to experience the basic structural elements of creating any narrative to the point of identifying with the work of an animation artist through the same techniques at Disney Studios.
