In the centenary year of the death of Eleonora Duse (Vigevano 1858 - Pittsburgh 1924), the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera is inaugurating its spring season with the festival I crowned wisdom today and lit the great fire, to be held Saturday, March 9 , 2024 from 4 p.m. Among the day’s inaugurations are new restored and redeveloped spaces of the Vittoriale, from the library to the back of the Priory to the Canile, from the Torre degli Archivi to the Cortile degli Schiavoni, passing through the Portico del Parente: a construction site that is always open with the goal of returning it to the public as d’Annunzio had wished it to be.
And then there is an exhibition dedicated to Umberto Boccioni. Open to the public from March 9 to May 10, 2024 within the space of the Museo d’Annunzio Segreto, the exhibition will showcase thirteen works never before exhibited to the public from the early period of Umberto Boccioni (Reggio Calabria, 1882 - Verona, 1916), among the more than forty found in the last eight years by curator Alberto Dambruoso.
There are three prefuturist portraits: one dedicated to his beloved sister Amelia, one that is assumed to portray his friend and companion in the Futurist adventure Luigi Russolo, and finally, the last, a young man whose identity is still unknown. A work from the early Futurist period then stands out, a portrait of a young woman whose face is stretched out over a lapis lazuli blue cushion.
“The exhibition of unpublished paintings by Boccioni at the Vittoriale constitutes an extraordinarily important opportunity to understand even more about the greatness of one of the most important Italian artists of the 20th century. The discovery of some portraits of rare beauty executed between 1906 and 1911, and some landscape impressions executed between 1908 and 1909, once again testify to Boccioni’s exceptional gifts as a portraitist and draughtsman,” says curator Dambruoso.
President of the Vittoriale Giordano Bruno Guerri, referring to the centennial celebration, says: “The solemn phrase that gives the event its title, taken from a telegram from Gabriele d’Annunzio to Luisa Baccara, is justified by the enormous amount of work that has occupied the Vittoriale’s winter. Of the five construction sites that were opened (and happily closed), three involved essential services: the bathrooms (completely renovated), the checkroom (also completely renovated and with the addition of a room where our guides can enjoy their breaks), and the library (renovated and now equipped with a reference room, where the public can browse through the volumes on sale). Two other worksites involved as many restorations: that - imposing - of the back of the Priory, from the Archives Tower to the Cortile degli Schiavoni, to the Canile, and that of the Portico del Parente, with the rediscovery of the decorations on the wooden ceilings, which seemed to have been lost.”
Also set up for the centenary is an exhibition space with some of Eleonora Duse’s objects. At the entrance to theAuditorium of the Vittorialedegli Italiani, the public will in fact find some of the actress’s objects from Fiorenzo Silvestri’s private collection and from the Vittoriale’s archival holdings.
