An exhibition in Salzburg on the figure of the exile artist: it's Resonanz von Exil

Through October 28, 2018, the exhibition “Resonanz von Exil” is running at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg. This exhibition is a look at the figure of the artist-exile, or those artists who, instead of drawing inspiration from aesthetics or culture, make works inspired by the events of their lives. Exiled from their homeland, these artists are thus forced to face the harsh reality, a different reality than the one they are accustomed to, and through their productions, they express this change in customs and traditions and, in case they are reintegrated into their homelands, juxtapose them with the traditions of their places of origin, creating interesting contrasts.

The exhibition, in particular, will focus on six artists: dancer Valeska Gert, photographers Lisette Model and Madame d’Ora, surrealist painter Wolfgang Paalen, illustrator and political activist Lili Réthi, and filmmaker Amos Vogel. Gert was a dancer at the Kammerspiele Theater in Munich, but in 1933 she fled as a result of racial laws and found temporary asylum in London. Both Model and d’Ora were born in Vienna, and while the former moved to the French Riviera where she became a society photographer, the latter moved to Paris to pursue her career as a fashion photographer.
Paalen, a surrealist poet and painter, was also originally from Vienna but moved to Mexico.

Both Réthi and Vogel were born in Vienna and moved to New York: the former was a technical and industrial illustrator while the latter founded Cinema16 in 1947, a cine-club dedicated to art film programming, active until 1963.
