On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Napoleon Bonaparte’s birth, the exhibition Napoleon 1769-2019: a ’Great’ of France in Tuscany on the 250th anniversary of his birth, curated by Giuseppe Adduci, is being held from July 29 to October 31, 2019, at the Palazzina dei Mulini, home of the Napoleonic Residences of Elba.
The exhibition aims to celebrate one of the great personalities who distinguished themselves in the construction ofTuscan identity, and Napoleon falls into this sphere because of both the Tuscan origins of his family, a native of San Miniato di Pisa, and the events that marked his descendant parable.
Displayed in the exhibition are prints and toy soldiers, videos, lighting and audio that help evoke suggestions of the Napoleonic period in question; present are period documents relating to Napoleon’s stay on the Island of Elba: anastatic copies of Napoleon’s autograph letters.
The lead soldiers belong to a collection of about 1,500 pieces, unique in the world, reproducing subjects from the historical period between the 18th century and the Italian Risorgimento. The collection belonged to Professor Alberto Predieri, and upon his death in 2001, his wife Francesca Rousseau donated it to the Fondazione CR Firenze for public display.
The engravings are mainly of Italian production and date from the first half of the 19th century: they narrate Napoleon’s military career, from the young general’s first successes in Toulon in 1793 to his exile on St. Helena and his death on May 5, 1821. They are a selection from a much larger collection and represent a significant piece in the reconstruction of the history ofNapoleonic iconography.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Regional Council of Tuscany, Fondazione CR Firenze, Fondazione Livorno-Arte e Cultura, under the patronage of the Embassy of France in Italy, Municipality of Portoferraio, University La Sorbonne-Villa Finaly Florence, Cesifn Foundation.
