An exhibition in Milan on the birth of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, inside the Last Supper

In Milan, the Cenacolo Vinciano hosts, from October 13, 2018 to January 13, 2019, the exhibition 'Leonardo da Vinci. First Ideas for the Last Supper'

The exhibition Leonardo da Vinci. First Ideas for the Last Supper, scheduled from October 13, 2018 to January 13, 2019 inside the Cenacolo Vinciano. The aim of the exhibition will be to recount the birth of Leonardo’s celebrated wall painting through a selection of ten drawings on loan from the Royal Collection, including seven produced by the hand of Leonardo da Vinci (Vinci, 1452 - Amboise, 1519) and three by his pupils.

The public will be able to admire the drawings right in front of Leonardo’s Last Supper, since the exhibition will be set up right inside the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the place that houses theLast Supper: the drawings will help visitors retrace the genesis of one of the greatest masterpieces in art history, which unfortunately deteriorated over time due to the technique used by Leonardo, who did not opt for a fresco but painted directly in tempera and oils on plaster using a dry technique, without, however, calculating that the high humidity of the environment would have been harmful to the work. The paintings on display in the Upper Room will be both compositional studies, or sketches with which the artist imagined the work as a whole, and studies of details.

The exhibition will be open to visitors during the same opening hours as the Last Supper, and with no surcharge on the ticket price: this is how the Polo Museale della Lombardia intends to open the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death, which will be held in 2019.
