An exhibition in Milan focuses on the figure of women in twentieth-century art

Woman in her everyday beauty is the focus of the exhibition The Times of Women. In the Beautiful Painting of the Twentieth Century, curated by Antonio D'Amico, which will be hosted from March 9 to March 23, 2024 at the Exhibition Hall headquarters of the Milan Cultural Center.

Woman in her everyday beauty: this is the theme of the exhibition The Times of Women. In the Beautiful Painting of the Twentieth Century, curated by Antonio D’Amico, which will be hosted from March 9 to March 23, 2024, at the Exhibition Hall headquarters of the Milan Cultural Center.

Promoted and realized by Organizzazione Flangini, with the collaboration of CMC Centro Culturale di Milano, Associazione Culturale Giuseppe e Gina Flangini and Culturalmente&Musicalmente, the exhibition features a selection of works by some of the most significant artists of the 20th century who pursued the ideals and technique of “beautiful painting,” delivering masterpieces of art anchored in reality, in which women are depicted in the different moments of existence.

At the opening, scheduled for Friday, March 8, 2024, at 5 p.m., curator Antonio D’Amico, director of the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum, Giorgio Appolonia, essayist and expert on Italian opera and contributor to Radio Svizzera Italiana, and M. Soprano Jae Hee Kim, who will sing excerpts from operas, will speak.

It is possible to admire an itinerary on the female figure represented according to the aesthetic canons of artists belonging to different cultural temperaments, through 50 works, including paintings and sculptures, from public and private collections. This occasion makes it possible to be able to unveil works kept in private collections that are difficult for the public to visit, generating a network of masterpieces that form the art-historical identity of a century devoted to civic and moral values, thanks to its protagonists, sometimes considered secondary or minor because they are far from fashionable currents and languages. The collections that make up this exhibition represent a way to keep the memory of these artists alive, as the Flangini Association, the Boccalatte Collection, and theMascarini Archive, among others, are custodians of a vast production of great quality, as are galleries such as Studiolo Fine Art, Palmieri and Faraci Arte.

“The woman,” writes curator Antonio D’Amico, “has always been the inspirational muse of painters, who have portrayed her qualities and desires, exalting her silences or fears, hopes and sadness; sensory implications of extraordinary emotional transport, which result in beautiful painting anchored in reality that from time to time enhances fascinating visions of innocence and seduction, with the romantic or realistic impetus that suits each painter.”

“In the history of Italian art, especially if we look at the figurative experiences between the turn of the century and the 1970s, a variety of artists have kept away from the fashions of the moment and the languages of critically recognized currents. Many artists remained dedicated and faithful to beautiful painting that has ancient roots, nurturing a worldview far removed from conceptualisms. Among the themes dear to these artists is that of the woman, a figure who more than any other knows the pleasure and suffering of everyday life. It will be possible to admire works of great psychological and emotional intensity that portray the female universe in different poses or simply imagining her daydreaming, capturing the aspects of a soul that is sometimes mysterious, often seductive and fragile or at the same time strong, painting her in the different seasons of life, from youth to old age, in the fatigue of knowing how to live or already projected toward achievements on the social level, but always aware of her femininity and beauty.”
