From April 19 to October 12, 2025, the halls of the JMuseo in Jesolo will host the exhibition Loving Picasso, curated by Piernicola Maria Di Iorio, which will investigate the artist’s complex relationship with the female universe, a dimension that permeated both his private life and his artistic output.
Throughout his career, Picasso intertwined numerous romantic relationships with women who significantly influenced his art. His muses, including Fernande Olivier, Dora Maar, Marie-Thérèse Walter, and Jacqueline Roque, often featured in his works at different stages of his creative journey. For Picasso, women represented not only a source of aesthetic inspiration, but also a way to explore the psychological and symbolic aspect. In his works, female figures often appear fragmented, distorted or reinterpreted, reflecting the complexity of his perception of love, desire and suffering. However, her relationships were often characterized by power dynamics and possessiveness, revealing a tension between admiration for femininity and a conflicted view of it.
Following this thread, the exhibition is divided into four main sections, tracing the artist’s graphic series. The exhibition is also enriched by the works of Dora Maar, surrealist photographer and painter as well as Picasso’s companion during the dark years of the war. Her drawings, oils, watercolors and etched photographs testify to the creative dialogue and mutual influence between the two. The exhibition also includes the fine lithographs of Françoise Gilot, the only woman who had the courage to leave Picasso to assert her creative independence.
Completing the itinerary are portraits taken by Robert Capa in 1948, capturing a mature but energetic Picasso on the French Riviera, offering a glimpse of the constant and inspiring presence of female figures in his life and art.
Produced by the City of Jesolo and organized by Piuma in collaboration with Arthemisia, the exhibition aims to bring to light the deep and complex dynamics between the artist and the female world that accompanied and inspired him throughout his career.
