The Palazzo dei Musei in Reggio Emilia is hosting from October 22 to 30, 2022 the exhibition The Art of Touching Art, on the occasion of which the section of the Omero State Tactile Museum of Ancona dedicated to the mimicry of the human face will be welcomed in the Reggio Emilia museum.
The project stems from the desire of the Garibaldi Institute for the Blind and the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia to share with citizens the idea that the accessibility of cultural heritage is a fundamental objective for cultural enrichment from which everyone, visually impaired or not, can benefit greatly. Great protagonists of this exploratory journey that will involve every visitor in an enveloping and multisensory way of enjoying the work of art will therefore be the hands.
The tactile exhibition intends to focus the visitor’s interest on perhaps the most expressive element of the human figure: the face. Therefore, a gallery of famous sculptures, casts from life in alabastrine plaster, arranged in chronological order has been set up: from Greek sculpture to Baroque sculpture, with the aim of proposing an experience that leads to the recognition or interpretation of certain facial expressions intended as expressions of various states of mind. The intent is to promote knowledge of this important aspect of the arts through tactile exploration, an aesthetic method that facilitates, not only for the visually impaired, the understanding of historical works and concepts.
For this occasion, tactile exploration of some of the busts in the Marble Gallery of the Museums Palace will also be possible to discover them in a new way. The tactile and multisensory approach conveys the idea of a culture without barriers, bringing the blind and visually impaired closer to art, giving everyone the opportunity to experience the capacity of touch, which, if used correctly, allows them to explore, “see” and understand works of art.
The exhibition will be open by reservation during the opening hours of Palazzo dei Musei, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For reservations call 0522.439305 or write to biblioteca@istitutociechigaribaldi.it
Sunday, Oct. 30, special opening of the exhibition with free admission without reservation: during the opening there will be operators and experts from the Garibaldi Institute for the Blind who will accompany the visit.
On Saturday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m., an afternoon is scheduled at the Palazzo dei Musei to test skills and abilities with “eyes closed.” The tactile journey, among the busts on display in the museum, will be enriched by a workshop in which children will be able to play with their own faces, reconstructed with unusual materials to play with breaking them down and putting them back together. Free participation; for info and reservations call 0522.456816
