On view until September 3, 2018 at the Museo del Settecento Veneziano at Ca’ Rezzonico in Venice is an exhibition honoring a painter who lived in Venice in the first half of the eighteenth century: Giulia Lama (1681 - 1747).
The artist confronted history painting with large, crowded compositions, receiving various ecclesiastical commissions, and her style was characterized by depictions with a strong plastic and expressive prominence and a decisive use of color.
She was a great lover of mathematics and poetry, so much so that she was considered a poet in her own right.
But it is in her drawings, particularly her nudes, that she most emphasized her unconventional and nonconformist side. In fact, twelve nude studies taken from life by her are presented in the exhibition from the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe of the Correr Museum, which has a large collection of the artist’s graphic works.
On the occasion of the exhibition"Giulia Lama. Painter and Poetess (1681-1747)," some of these drawings have been restored and are now on display for the first time in the Tapestry Room of Ca’ Rezzonico.
Curator Alberto Craievich emphasizes that in these works we find nothing delicate or gentle: it is a style antithetical to the commonplaces of femininity.
The exhibition is part of the project"Eppur ci sono! Three women around the. Venetian eighteenth century: Luisa, Giulia, Maddalena" promoted by Vittoria Surian and her Cultural Association Eidos.
