An entire city was built in Milan with thousands of Lego bricks

From Oct. 10, 2019 to Feb. 2, 2020, Milan's Palazzo della Permanente is hosting the exhibition 'I Love Lego.

The Palazzo della Permanente in Milan is hosting, from October 10, 2019 to February 2, 2020, a very special exhibition: it is I love Lego, an exhibition that displays dioramas all made with Lego bricks.More than a million bricks were used to make these assemblages: the public thus gets to see a contemporary city (with streets, buildings, services, traffic, parks, markets and whatnot) and reconstructions of ancient monuments, medieval scenarios, pieces of ancient Rome and much more, arranged on dozens of square meters of sceneries all made with the famous matoncini. The dioramas were made by RomaBrick, one of Europe’s oldest and most experienced LUGs (Lego User Group).

I LOVE LEGO thus intends to tell the story of the transformation into a work of art of one of the most famous toys in the world, with which we all played as children. But there are not only dioramas: among the installations it will also be possible to see twelve paintings inspired by masterpieces of art history and created by the young contemporary artist Stefano Bolcato, who has combined his passion for LEGOs and the great art of the past.

The exhibition also boasts a partnership with "Legolize," a humorous Facebook page that creates comic installations using LEGOs of all things. Founded by two young people, Mattia Marangon and Samuele Rovituso, the page was born in 2016 and currently has more than half a million fans on Instagram and as many on Facebook. Legolize will bring comedy into the exhibition, with special installations and even “invading” existing dioramas.

The exhibition is organized by Arthemisia, which has partnered with the aforementioned RomaBrick, a rib of the national association of LEGO lovers: Roma Brick intends to put teamwork at the center of its mission to create environments that are among the greatest to be seen in the world. Every single part of the installations on display is therefore the result of collective and original design: each building, street, medium or square is conceived by a team that boasts the presence of numerous architects and engineers.
