An anthological exhibition in Pistoia dedicated to the photography of Aurelio Amendola

Pistoia dedicates a major anthological exhibition to Aurelio Amendola, an important master of Italian photography

The Ancient, the Very Ancient, the Avant-Garde and the Contemporary, the happenings of the 1970s, the ateliers, the maze of friendships and collaborations, the large exhibitions, the small museums: with AURELIO AMENDOLA | An Anthology. Michelangelo, Burri, Warhol and the Others, an anthological exhibition dedicated to Aurelio Amendola, a master of Italian photography, from February 8 to July 25, 2021, the Fondazione Pistoia Musei brings the world of Amendola in three hundred images to its two venues, Palazzo Buontalenti and the Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi.

Aurelio Amendola, a skillful experimenter of novel juxtapositions between the Ancient and the Contemporary,is among the most elegant and prolific photographers of our time:his images have a strength that is millions of years old and, at the same time, convey pure grace and melody.

The Fondazione Pistoia Musei exhibition is also meant to be a tribute to the career of an author of great intensity, capable of transforming natural elements into metaphors of sensuality and carnality, firmly anchored in the Tuscan cultural context and his Pistoia in particular, not only an artist of the genius loci but an interpreter of universal genius.

AURELIO AMENDOLA | An Anthology. Michelangelo, Burri, Warhol and the Others, is divided into two large parts (Ancient and Contemporary) linked by continuous figurative cross-references, tracing more than 60 years of activity and all the genres in which the author has experimented, explored by specific sections of the exhibition.

This is the first exhibition that brings together almost all of Amendola’s production, offering the public the opportunity to admire its figurative coherence, its connection with the classical tradition, with the history of Art and Photography, and with the great contemporary masters.

Photographer of theHermitage in St. Petersburg, the Uffizi, the Vatican Museums, FMR magazine, the Vittoriale degli Italiani, and numerous other national and international museum institutions, linked to many artists of the twentieth century, Aurelio Amendolais a world-renowned author, whose photography is not reduced to simple reproduction, but is similar to sculptural practice, its plastic harmony, volume and sensuality.

An interpreter par excellence of the work of Michelangelo, a sublime witness of the ancient in his shots dedicated to Canova, Bernini, Jacopo della Quercia, Donatello and Giovanni Pisano, and of the contemporary with his portraits of Burri, de Chirico, Warhol, Manzù, Vedova, Fontana, Ceroli, Lichtenstein,Kounellis and many others, Amendola was able to converse with the spirit of the artists, absorbing their style and intensity.

Far from the documentary model, with the special grace of the atmospheric and sensory quality of his shots, Aurelio Amendola’s photography is never an aesthetic object but a poetic and delicate act, at the same time carnal and spiritual, meditative and seductive.
