Promotional initiative for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which decided to bring some of its art to the local Schiphol Airport. In fact, the 73 meters of belt number 16 in baggage claim in Hall 3 have been decorated with images of forty-five paintings by the greatest Dutch painters of all time: from Rembrandt to Vermeer to the more modern Vincent van Gogh and Karel Appel, all accompanied by the words Welcome to the Netherlands.
But that’s not all: in an area that the airport has decided to reserve for the Rijksmuseum, a small exhibition of ten paintings from the Golden Age of Dutch art has been set up. This makes Schiphol Airport the only airport in the world that can house original works from the 17th century. The exhibition is open 24 hours a day, and visitors can access it at any time without paying anything. Souvenirs from the Rijksmuseum and other Dutch museums can also be purchased in the airport store.
The exhibition, simply titled Dutch masterpieces at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (“Dutch masterpieces at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport”) features portraits and landscapes by artists such as Jan van Goyen, Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt, Willem van de Velde the Younger, Abraham Mignon, Ludolf Bakhuysen, and Philips Koninck. The exhibition was supported by ING, the main sponsor of the Rijksmuseum and Schiphol Airport. More information (including a list of all works on display at the airport, with links to images and fact sheets) can be found on the Rijksmuseum website in the dedicated section.
Also released is a promotional video illustrating the decorated ribbon initiative:
