Abano Terme, coming soon Cesare Laurenti's Lady of the Lake, distinguished guest at Villa Bassi Rathgeb

Distinguished guest at the exhibition at Villa Bassi Rathgeb in Abano Terme: Cesare Laurenti's Lady of the Lake, a splendid example of 19th-century portraiture.

As part of the exhibition 6/900. From Magnasco to Fontana. Dialogue Between Two Collections set up at Villa Bassi Rathgeb in Abano Terme and extended until June 13, 2021, an illustrious guest will arrive that will embellish the great exhibition even more.

It is La dama del lago, a work by Cesare Laurenti (Mesola, 1854 - Venice, 1936) that depicts a young aristicratic woman of whom there is no information: all that is known is that she lived in a villa on Lake Garda.

Presenting the magnificent painting, Virginia Baradel, who with Mariella Gnani curates the exhibition, said that “Laurenti demonstrates in this painting, datable to the end of the 19th century, his undisputed skills as a portrait painter, capable of capturing not only the muliebral and youthful beauty of the noble lady, but also of knowing how to create an allure of bright, positive romanticism, devoid of torment and dotted with vermilion roses. For these qualities, the hitherto unpublished portrait stands as a counterbalance to the melancholy maiden, by Cesare Tallone in the permanent collection.” “A duet that makes the theme of comparison on which the exhibition is based even more striking,” the curator continues. “Both Caesars resort to roses as a symbol of romantic femininity, but the spirit of Laurenti’s lady is full of grace and vigor, her cheeks and lips red while Tallone’s maiden is pale and abandoned on the back of the chair.”

The exhibition will be open to visitors on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.; on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with special reduced admission at 5 euros, valid in the mornings and from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., and with opportunities for thematic guided tours by appointment.
