A major Steve McCurry exhibition in Trent dedicated to the mountains and their people

Trento's Palazzo delle Albere is hosting a major exhibition with 130 shots taken by Steve McCurry and dedicated to mountains until September 19, 2021.

In the historic venue of Trento’s Palazzo delle Albere, from June 19 to September 19, 2021, the Mart and MUSE are organizing for the first time together the major exhibition Steve McCurry. Terre Alte, a special project by the famous contemporary photographer dedicated to the theme of mountains.

From an idea by Vittorio Sgarbi and Gabriele Accornero, the exhibition curated by Biba Giacchetti and Denis Isaia and realized in collaboration with Sudest57 intends to tell the story of mountain lands and peoples: a journey among the altitudes of the world; Afghanistan, Tibet, Mongolia, Japan, Brazil, Burma, the Philippines, Morocco, and Yemen narrate the symbiosis between peoples, animals and landscapes according to the expressive code that has made Steve McCurry one of the most beloved contemporary photographers.

The exhibition is spread over two floors and brings together 130 shots that describe the fascination of the mountains, their landscapes, and their peoples. The images document with extraordinary power the spirit of the peaks, the sacredness, the gazes and the power of life in extreme conditions.

The exhibition is also enhanced by the Icons Room, a room in which the photographer’s career is traced through eleven of his best-known shots. These include the very famous portrait of the Afghan girl taken in 1984.

Terre Alte intends to capture the enchantment of nature, with its landscapes of sublime beauty and its “mountain people.” The balance of the lifestyle of peoples accustomed to confronting two opposites, danger and opportunity, emerges powerfully.

The images, some previously unpublished, tell of McCurry’s tireless desire to explore, discover and reveal the world. A life dedicated to boundless landscapes, dilated times, and silences that envelop the spirit by referencing ancient traditions and contemporary cultures. The narrative of altitudes suspended between heaven and earth captures the harmony between landscape, humans and animals that still endures, emphasizing its fragility.

The aim of the exhibition is also to be a cue for reflection on climate and anthropological changes and cultural decolonization. Throughout McCurry’s work recurs a political spirit, an ecological and pacifist streak, and a deep humanitarian commitment recognizable particularly in the representation of underrepresented or ignored cultures. Parallel to his photography profession, McCurry promotes projects for literacy and empowerment of the poorest populations.

Hours: Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets: Full 7 euros, reduced 5 euros. Free up to 14 years old.
