The Palazzo di Città in Cagliari will host from May 31 to October 6, 2024 the major retrospective Robert Capa. Photographs 1932-1954, curated by Marco Minuz, organized by the Cagliari Municipal Administration - Department of Culture, in collaboration with Silvana Editoriale and with the contribution of the Fondazione di Sardegna. Dedicated to Robert Capa (Budapest, 1913 - Thai-Binh, Vietnam, 1954), considered the pioneer of modern photojournalism, the exhibition will present, thanks to the collaboration with theMagnum Photosagency in Paris, 110 photographs, with the aim of offering a complete anthological journey.

The exhibition traces all the major experiences that marked the career of the Hungarian photographer, a naturalized U.S. citizen. From bustling Paris to the Spanish Civil War, from the wartime experience between China and Japan to World War II with the liberation of Italy to Montecassino, and the Normandy landings, the 80th anniversary of which is being celebrated this year. The exhibition continues with the Allied advance as far as Berlin, post-World War II Russia, the birth of the state of Israel, and finally the conflict in Indochina, where Capa lost his life in 1954, driven by a desire to immortalize the reality of conflicts up close.

In addition to images documenting the most dramatic moments in 20th century history, the exhibition also aims to explore Capa’s relationship with the cultural world of the time. Visitors will see portraits of famous figures such as Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote and Henri Matisse, revealing the photographer’s ability to capture the essence of the people portrayed.

This retrospective aims to uncover the extraordinary work of Robert Capa, not only as a witness to conflicts, but also as a portraitist and storyteller of the daily life and culture of his time.
