From March 29 to July 24, 2022, the Petit Palais in Paris is hosting the retrospective Boldini. Les plaisirs e les jours, curated by Servane Dargnies de Vitry, curator of nineteenth-century painting at the Petit Palais, and Barbara Guidi, director of the Civic Museums of Bassano del Grappa.
The exhibition aims to chronologically retrace the artistic career of Giovanni Boldini (Ferrara, 1842 - Paris, 1931), from his training in Italy to his long career in Paris, highlighting the artist’s links with the society of his time, fashion, luxury, celebrities, European aristocracy, models and mistresses, artists and writers.
The last retrospective in France devoted to Giovanni Boldini, a virtuoso portraitist of the Parisian upper middle class at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, was over sixty years ago. On display at the Petit Palais will be one hundred and fifty works, including paintings, drawings, engravings, costumes and fashion accessories on loan from international museums and numerous private collections; there will be more than thirty works on loan from Ferrara, the painter’s hometown, but they will also come from the Capodimonte Museum, the National Gallery in London, the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée Galliera - Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris.
Through the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to relive the pleasures of the Belle Époque and the vitality of an avant-garde capital.
As part of the exhibition, there will also be a lecture given by Servane Dargnies de Vitry on April 5 at 12:30 p.m. in the Auditorium
The retrospective is also made possible thanks to the support of Maison Christian Dior Couture.
