From January 30 to May 3, 2020, GAM in Turin will host the exhibition Helmut Newton. Works, curated by Matthias Harder, curator of the Helmut Newton Fundation in Berlin.
The major retrospective devoted to the celebrated photographer Helmut Newton (Berlin, 1920 - West Hollywood, 2004) opens the exhibition season of GAM - Turin’s Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea: 68 photographs, selected by the director of the German foundation, will be on display to present the public with a broad overview of the artist’s long career. A body of work that has achieved enormous success thanks to the magazines and books in which they have been made visible and the exhibitions that have presented his photos.
The exhibition itinerary, divided into four sections, includes shots ranging from the 1970s, with the numerous covers for Vogue, to his later work, namely the portrait of Leni Riefenstahl taken in 2000. It is a journey through Newton’s photographic output intended to give visitors an understanding of his work.
In the course of his work, he has portrayed many famous people of the 20th century, such as Andy Warhol (1974), Gianni Agnelli (1997), Paloma Picasso (1983), Catherine Deneuve (1976), Anita Ekberg (1988), Claudia Schiffer (1992) and Gianfranco Ferré (1996). For Mario Valentino and Thierry Mugler, a number of photo shoots taken in 1998 for major photo campaigns will be on display, and there will also be iconic shots for major international fashion magazines.
All his work is characterized by a clear sense of aesthetics, but also by fashion, portraiture and nudity. Women are the protagonists, but the interaction between men and women is also often shown.
The retrospective is promoted by Fondazione Torino Musei and produced by Civita Mostre e Musei with the collaboration of the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin.
