From Feb. 24 to June 30, 2024, the rooms of the Museo Civico San Domenico in Forlì will host a major exhibition dedicated to the Pre-Raphaelites, conceived and realized by the Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì in collaboration with the Municipality of Forlì, curated by Francesco Parisi, Liz Prettejohn and Peter Trippi; Gianfranco Brunelli is the general director.
Titled Pre-Raphaelites. A New Renaissance, the exhibition will display more than three hundred works including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, furniture, ceramics, glass and metal works, textiles, medals, illustrated books, manuscripts and jewelry, with the intention of reconstructing the profound impact of historical Italian art on the British Pre-Raphaelite movement between the 1840s and the 1920s. It is a theme not yet explored in depth in Italy, which will be investigated by placing side by side a substantial representation of Italian models with British works-a challenge that this project intends to meet thanks to generous loans from museums throughout Italy.
In addition, the exhibition also aims to intrigue English-speaking audiences by showing, for the first time, works by late 19th-century Italian artists who were inspired by their British precursors. In addition to the founding artists, other key exponents of the movement such as Edward Burne-Jones, Ford Madox Brown and Frederic Leighton will be explored in depth, while other talents will be represented by a selection of works highlighting specific points of connection.
