A major exhibition dedicated to dedicated to Michelangelo Buonarroti, curated by Carmen C. Bambach, director of the MET’s graphic design department and among the leading experts on the celebrated Renaissance artist, entitled "Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer." The exhibition, which will run from Nov. 13, 2017 to Feb. 12, 2018, will showcase 133 drawings, three sculptures, and one painting (the famous Torment of St. Anthony from the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, attributed to Michelangelo but hotly debated), all of which are on loan from 48 museums and private collections in the United States and Europe.
More than 50 of these works come “only” fromItaly, from the Uffizi, the Bargello, Casa Buonarroti in Florence, the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, the Vatican Library and the Fabbrica di San Pietro in the Vatican.
“”For me, this exhibition is a dream come true. The intent is to broaden the discussion about Michelangelo. It’s an extraordinary opportunity to see works from fifty-three different museums and collections, and that have never been seen together," said Bambach, who in 2003 created the MET’s major exhibition on Leonardo.
"Michelangelo uses drawing in a variety of ways, from the earliest barely sketched sketches to the finished drawings that come from the Royal Collection at Windsor. Drawing,“ the curator further explains, ”is Michelangelo’s starting point for creating paintings, sculptures, and architecture."
The exhibition, as the curator points out, took about 8 years to prepare and represents a rare opportunity for the American public to view such a large number of drawings by the Renaissance master, some of which are not generally displayed precisely for fear of the damage that light might cause. All information about the exhibition can be found on the Metropolitan Museum’s website.
