On view from June 1 through September 2, 2018 is the exhibition Chagall: The Breakthrough Years, 1911-1919. Staged at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the exhibition showcases the 80 works Marc Chagall created between 1911 and 1919, considered, as the title says, the artist’s breakthrough years during which he elaborated the themes, poetics, and stylistic signature that would later mark his entire creative journey.During this period, in fact, Chagall lived in Paris where he was influenced by the avant-garde movements, but at the same time he remained on the fringes of them, thus achieving a style all his own, mixing Jewish culture (he being Jewish) and Russian culture (he spent a period in St. Petersburg) with French painting. From his works one can sense his love for his hometown Vitebsk and his wife Bella.
The works on display come from such imprtant museums as Moma in New York, the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow, and the Obersteg and Beyele Foundations.
