From October 15, 2019 to January 19, 2020, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna will host a major exhibition entitled Caravaggio & Bernini and dedicated to the two great masters of the 17th century, Caravaggio (Milan, 1571 - Porto Ercole, 1610) and Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Naples, 1598 - Rome, 1680). The exhibition will compare the masterpieces of the two great artists (the “pioneering” works in particular will be on display in Austria), and will be enriched by the works of other greats of European art of the time, such as Nicolas Poussin, Orazio Gentileschi, Alessandro Algardi and Simon Vouet: the exhibition will also explore how the Baroque evolved from Rome to the rest of Europe.
Innovations in 17th-century art will be presented through the contribution of “about 60 major works” (so in the exhibition’s presentation), described as “fascinating, highly dramatic, charged with intense passion, strong movement and colorful theatricality.”
