A major exhibition of Marina Abramović's recent and historical works in Bergamo

A new cultural hub for art, gres art, opens in Bergamo, and it does so with a major exhibition on Marina Abramović: 30 works including recent and historical works are on display.

A major exhibition of Marina Abramović’s 30 recent and historical works is scheduled in Bergamo. It is being organized by the city’s new center for art and culture, gres art, which is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the Serbian artist, curated by Karol Winiarczyk, from Sept. 14, 2024 until February 2025. Titled Between Breath and Fire, the exhibition aims to offer a journey into the greatness, solitude, myth, and transience of the human being through the works of one of the most influential artists of our time.

The exhibition starts with the film installation Seven Deaths, a tribute to Maria Callas made by Abramović, and develops, as anticipated, through a selection of 30 recent and historical works. A distinctive element of the exhibition is the osmotic involvement of the adjacent garden, enhanced by the soundscape Tree, first presented at the SKC Cultural Centre in Belgrade in 1972.

The exhibition is an immersion in Marina Abramović’s universe, weaving parallels and references between her interpretations of the divine Callas and the major themes that permeate her work. The exhibition promises to be an experience that combines beauty and social impact, reflecting the sustainable model that promotes community well-being, as intended by the urban regeneration project promoted by the Italmobiliare Group with the Pesenti Foundation.

"Seven Deaths,“ says curator Karol Winiarczyk, ”takes the form of an immersive cinematic experience based on seven untimely deaths that Marina Abramović presents on the screen, as a soundtrack seven solos by Maria Callas. The installation manifests Abramović’s fascination with opera and Callas in particular, a passion that began during her adolescence in Belgrade. It is an immersive journey through the life of one of the most influential artists of our time, paired with the Divina’s most famous arias; a cathartic experience that prompts deeper personal reflection."

“We are thrilled to inaugurate gres art 671, in its final form, with Marina Abramović, a world-renowned artist who has always placed the viewer at the center of her work and art,” says President Roberto Pesenti. "Our cultural hub was born precisely with the ambition to involve visitors as much as possible, making them interact with the space and the works, making them an active part of the journey. After the preview on the occasion of the Italian Capital of Culture 2023, hosting Between Breath and Fire now means aspiring to have, in a single perspective, the vision of an extraordinary artist with the mission of a cultural place, a perfect combination that honors us and that will certainly be able to arouse great emotions."
