A major anthological exhibition on Max Beckmann at the Mendrisio Museum of Art.

The Mendrisio Art Museum will host a major anthological exhibition dedicated to Max Beckmann from October 28, 2018 to January 27, 2019.

From Oct. 28, 2018, to Jan. 27, 2019, the Mendrisio Art Museum will host the major anthological exhibition"Max Beckmann. Paintings, Sculptures, Watercolors, Drawings and Graphics."

Along the exhibition route, 30 paintings, 17 watercolors, 80 graphics and 2 sculptures will be on view to the public to cover the most salient chapters of one of the greatest masters of modern art and all the techniques he used. It will also be an opportunity to admire much of his graphic production, completed between 1917 and 1925 and after World War II.

The anthological exhibition will proceed chronologically and thematically, allowing visitors to understand the evolution of the artistic language of Max Beckmann (Leipzig, 1884 - New York, 1950).

Recently, the curator of the exhibition, Siegfried Gohr, focused on a previously unseen aspect of the painter’s art, namely the search for certain central elements in his works, such as mirrors, musical instruments, books, flowers, and plants; starting with common objects found in paintings or works on paper, Gohr investigates their meaning and significance.

The artist’s self-portraits constitute a very strong contemporary biographical and historical record, while the mythological and allegorical inventions are significant.

The anthological exhibition was made possible thanks to the support of the Beckmann family and the Artist’s Archive.
