The Villa Bernasconi Museum in Cernobbio on Lake Como is hosting from March 7 to September 20, 2020, the exhibition Narrative Flowers. Illustrators of Art Nouveau in Dialogue with Villa Bernasconi.
Visitors can admire works by some of the most celebrated artists active at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries who saw feminine beauty and nature as a universe of elegance and harmony.
Among these masterpieces, the large and rare lithograph on canvas entitled Les fleurs made in 1894 by Alphonse Mucha for Home Decor and from the collection of the Arte Nuova Foundation is also on display. In dialogue with this work are three other Mucha lithographs on paper, from a series of four, completed in 1898, depicting women with flowers, particularly the carnation, iris and rose.
Also present is a lithograph on paper by Paul Berthon, entitled Les bulles de neiges, dating from the early twentieth century. Influenced by Eugène Grasset in style, the French painter and illustrator’s production is marked by its own recognizability, distinguished by pastel colors and sharp outlines.
Four lithographs on paper, dated 1901, by Elisabeth Sonrel are added, depicting water, wild, mountain and greenhouse flowers. A successful painter and illustrator, Sonrel exhibited frequently at the Paris Salons from 1893 to 1941.
Also included in the exhibition are a 1920s inlaid walnut-root lectern with a stylized neoclassical woman figure and a mahogany wood sitting room by cabinetmaker Eugenio Quarti.
The exhibition is curated by Elena Franco, artistic director of FAN - Fondazione Arte Nova.
