Until January 6, 2020, the Museo di San Marco in Florence is exhibiting Robert Campin’s The Annunciation. An Illustrious Guest from the Prado Museum for the 150th Anniversary of the Museo di San Marco, a work from the Prado Museum in Madrid.

The Prado celebrated its 200th anniversary this year with the exhibition Fra Angelico and the rise of the Florentine Renaissance, to which the Museo di San Marco and the Polo Museale della Toscana contributed prestigious loans of masterpieces by Beato Angelico and Masaccio. In return, the Madrid museum granted Robert Campin’sAnnunciation as an extraordinary gift to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Museo di San Marco.

The work was placed in dialogue with works by Beato Angelico preserved in Florence: the tabernacle with theAnnunciation and Adoration of the Magi, from the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. This is a unique opportunity to see these two different Annunciations side by side: the Florentine Renaissance declined by Beato Angelico expresses an interest in space scaled in depth, painted with luminous and celestial colors; the Flemish culture of Robert Campin expresses an analytical, meticulous narrative, attentive to details and made brilliant by the colors of oil painting. The two works date from about the same period: around 1425 for Angelico’s tabernacle and between 1425 and 1430 for Campin’s painting. Both artists initiated new figurative languages that broke away from the still flourishing late Gothic world.

The exhibition is curated by Marilena Tamassia.
