A dialogue between art, architecture and design: in Milan, the Mimesis exhibition for Design Week

From April 15 to 21 for Milan Design Week, the exhibition Mimesis Form and Image opens, which is based on the dialogue between different disciplines, creating a synergistic relationship between artists.

On the occasion of Milan Design Week 2024, HoperAperta, a project that combines Art, Architecture and Design, presents the exhibition MIMESIS Form and Image, scheduled April 15-21 at Spazio HoperAperta in Milan, curated by Patrizia Catalano and Maurizio Barberis. MIMESIS is an exhibition that involves multiple actors, including the New York Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture and Design, already a partner of HoperAperta in 2022 and 2023, and is based on a dialogue between different disciplines, creating a synergistic relationship between performers of the arts scene. Mimesis: paraphrasing the Platonic Republic, it could be argued that any object designed, imagined or made, however reproduced in an image with different potentialities of use, presupposes three different degrees of approximation: a point of relation, a point of transformation, a point of representation. An ideal form, completely independent of its functions constitutes a first point of Mimesis.

Mimesis implies a mutual identification between forms and images of different natures. This relationship can manifest itself in the space-time of objects, in the relationship between light and movement, or in the ideal representation of the object. The exhibition offers a discussion of these issues among the artists and architects invited to exhibit. Maurizio Barberis, deals with the theme through the theatricalization of an image reduced to an object of use; Alfonso Femia’s work, on the other hand, stands in the synthesis, point of relationship, between the image of the Temple and the figure of the Vitruvian theater; Armando Bruno works in the resumption-mimesis of Francis Bacon’s conceptual cage; Elena Salmistraro works in the specular reduction of two symmetrically opposed figures. Spagnulo and Partners stages a work that synthesizes the relationship between light and time; finally, Carmelo Zappulla designs a work that accounts for the variations of light in the contemporary city.

In addition, the New York Institute of Technology is presenting seven projects by undergraduates in the Fabbrication and Robotics course, supervised by Fadhil Fadhil and Alessandro Melis. Mimesis will be exhibited in partnership with the Fondazione Paolo Grassi at the Palazzo Ducale in Martina Franca from June 21 to August 2024, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Itria Valley Opera Festival. Artists in the exhibition include Maurizio Barberis, Armando Bruno, Dorian X, Alfonso Femia, Duccio Grassi, Federica Marangoni, Alessandro Melis, Daniele Menichini, Nicolas Turchi, Steve Piccolo, Odilia Prisco, Elena Salmistraro, Studio Spagnulo and Partners, Alberto Vannetti, and Carmelo Zappulla. Mimesis is sponsored by Cromonichel, De Castelli, iGuzzini, Gonzato Group, Julia Marmi, Marmi Faedo, Artisans Loving Robots, Panzeri, Sprech, and Zeus, leading companies in lighting engineering and the processing of materials such as metal and marble, with a commitment to environmental sustainability. The exhibition is part of Milan Design Week 2024, promoted and organized by the City of Milan.
