A contemporary art exhibition at the Egyptian Museum to commemorate the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb

The Egyptian Museum in Turin commemorates the anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb with a contemporary art exhibition. It consists of three projects by Egyptian artist Sara Sallam.

From Nov. 4, 2022 to Jan. 31, 2023, the Egyptian Museum of Turin is hosting an exhibition of contemporary art by Sara Sallam (1991), an emerging Egyptian artist living in the Netherlands, entitled Through the Eyes of Tutankhamun: Alternative Perspectives on Egyptology, on the anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

The exhibition presents three different projects by the artist: A Tourist Handbook for Egypt Outside of Egypt, i.e., a tour guide through the streets of Paris commemorating the sites and battles of Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt that aims to propose an alternative historical narrative to the dominant Western one; Home Outside of Home, a series of prints in which decontextualized ancient objects in European cities express their nostalgia for their places of origin; and I Prayed For The Resin Not To Melt, a’video installation in which the artist transports the audience to Tutankhamun’s tomb at the time of its discovery, yet completely distorting the perspective of the Western mythologized narrative of the discovery, and focusing on hearing rather than seeing the pharaoh’s treasures to restore Tutankhamun’s point of view in one of the most dramatic moments of his own existence after death. The exhibition is curated by Sara Sallam and Paolo Del Vesco, curator of the Egyptian Museum.

On Monday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m., the Egyptian Museum will host a lecture by Sara Sallam, an artist who works with photography, film footage and writing, sometimes even reappropriating archival material and self-publishing handmade books. Through her work, Sallam aims to reflect on the colonial aspects inherent in tourism, archaeology, museum practices and photographic archives. At the conference, the artist will present the exhibition in which an anti-colonial critique of archaeology, Egyptology and museum collections is addressed. All of Sara Sallam’s projects invite, in different ways, a radical paradigm shift and a drastic transformation of one’s point of view.
