The historic Biennale Internazionale della Ceramica d’Arte Contemporanea, the 63rd Faenza Prize, is preparing to host a selection of works representing theglobal avant-garde in ceramic work from June 28 to Nov. 30, 2025. The exhibition, hosted at the MIC in Faenza, will highlight the most innovative artistic productions of a material that, over the years, has also seen renewed interest as a sculptural and installation medium. Ceramics, which has always been linked to artisanal and decorative traditions, is now the protagonist of an evolution that sees it play a leading role in the contemporary art scene.
An event that not only testifies to the excellence of ceramics, but also reflects its ability to be a universal language capable of embracing different poetics. The selected artists come from 41 countries, with representation spanning five continents. In total, 109 artists were chosen by the international jury composed of Claudia Casali, director of MIC Faenza, Hyeyoung Cho of the Korea Association of Art & Design, Valentins Petjko of the Latvian Ceramic Biennale, and Marco Maria Polloniato, curator and ceramics expert. This selection, which saw the submission of 1318 works by 874 artists from 72 nations, confirms the global interest in the Faenza Prize, which for more than 80 years has been a key event for the world of artistic ceramics.
The jury chose a mix of under and over 35 artists, with a clear predominance of the “over 35” (74 artists from 34 countries) over the “under 35” (35 artists from 21 countries), indicating a participation of artists with diverse experiences and a multiplicity of approaches. Selected works will include striking installations as well as works that explore ceramics in its plastic, sculptural and communicative potential, highlighting the versatility of the material.
Ceramic art in recent years has acquired new dimensions, becoming a medium that preserves tradition and renews itself through new forms and content.
“We are very satisfied with the result in terms of participation and quality,” comments Claudia Casali, MIC Faenza director and president of the Jury. “The Faenza Prize always proves to be an excellence in the international art scene. The Jury made a selection that took into consideration the relevance today of ceramics as a sculptural and installation material. There are poetic novelties and a freshness of presentation remains, just conveying the constant artistic update. It will be a tough choice to identify the winners.”
The exhibition, which will open its doors on June 28, 2025, promises to be a unique opportunity to take a closer look at the trends and innovations that are characterizing ceramics, particularly in its more contemporary declinations.
The Faenza Prize will also be enriched by a wide-ranging program of meetings and insights. From March to May 2025 there will be Faenza Prize Talks, a series of weekly online meetings featuring the selected artists. These meetings, which have received great interest in past editions, will offer the public the chance to come into direct contact with the artists, exploring their creative process, techniques and the inspirations behind their works. On June 27, 2025, the opening day of the exhibition, the winners of the Faenza Prize will also be announced in a ceremony that honors the most innovative and deserving works.
The Faenza Prize, which has always had a strong connection with the territory of Emilia-Romagna, is made possible thanks to the support of important institutional and cultural entities. These include the Directorate General for Research Education and Cultural Institutes, the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Municipality of Faenza, the Union of Romagna Faentina, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ravenna, Cersaie and Hera. The Prize also enjoys the support of numerous media partners, including D’Ars, who help give the event national and international visibility.
