In Venice, during the months of June and September, the directors and curators of the four museums belonging to Dorsoduro Museum Mile (i.e., Gallerie dell’Accademia, Galleria di Palazzo Cini, Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Punta della Dogana) will dress up as guides to accompany the public on free guided tours and reduced-price access in the museum venues of the art mile. An unprecedented series of guided tours, led by their respective directors and curators and dedicated to a number of cross-cutting themes in art of all times, from the ancient to the contemporary, through the current collections and exhibitions.
A journey in stages along the mile of art in the Venetian sestiere of Dorsoduro, marked by two key themes, light and color that, like a common thread, will accompany the public to discover or rediscover, under a new and singular point of view, some of the greatest masterpieces of international art.
The initiative, entitled The Guides of the Mile, offers eight free tours every Monday in June and September, at 12 noon, in the four institutions of the Dorsoduro Museum Mile. Participation in the tours is free, subject to availability. Visitors who purchase a paid ticket at one of the museums in the Dorsoduro Museum Mile or are Membership Card holders at one of the institutions are entitled to reduced admission at the other partner venues. The month of June is dedicated to the theme of light, after the first event held on June 5 at the Gallerie dell’Accademia, it continued on June 12 at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, on June 19 it will be time at Punta della Dogana, and then concludes on June 26 at the Galleria di Palazzo Cini.
September, on the other hand, will be dedicated to the theme of color scheduled visits Sept. 4 at the Gallerie dell’Accademia, Sept. 11 at the Palazzo Cini Gallery, Sept. 18 at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Sept. 25 at Punta della Dogana, also at 12 noon.
"With Giorgione’s Tempest, we have the pleasure of inaugurating the initiative The Guides of the Mile, promoted by the Dorsoduro Museum Mile and dedicated in this first appointment to the theme of light," explains Gallerie dell’Accademia director Giulio Manieri Elia, who accompanied visitors on June 5. “It is the museum’s icon, which still exerts an extraordinary fascination on the public and among scholars because of its still mysterious iconography, great care of natural effects, chromatism and light.”
“Walking the art mile through the Dorsoduro sestiere discovering some of its artistic gems told by the living voice of directors and curators certainly gives added value to the Dorsoduro Museum Mile,” says Karole P. B. Vail director of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. “Since its inception in 2015, this project has been based on the synergistic union of Venetian institutions that wish to guide the public on a journey that unites the treasures of antiquity with the masterpieces of the contemporary, passing through the great masters of modern art.”
“The Dorsoduro Museum Mile,” emphasizes Giorgio Cini Foundation Institute of Art History director Luca Massimo Barbero, “is for the public in Venice a cultural peninsula, a kind of unique artistic constellation, and an experience, I would say, unique. It allows, among other things, after the Accademia to visit Vittorio Cini’s palace and house museum, with its Ferrara and Tuscan masterpieces, introducing the visitor to an intimate and profound journey to another extraordinary house museum, the Guggenheim, and to the projection towards the contemporary and the future of Punta della Dogana.”
“The success of the Dorsoduro Museum Mile,” says Bruno Racine, Director and Managing Director of Palazzo Grassi - Punta della Dogana, “over the past three years has confirmed the importance of our network’s cultural offerings and its openness to an increasingly broad audience. Together with the series of online guides I Diari del Miglio created by the four institutions, 2023 sees a new project aimed at dialogue between institutions, visitors and the city. We are very happy to invite the public to discover in a brand new format our magnificent collections and exhibitions the current temporary ones, and to retrace them with a privileged look.”
During the months of June and September, the admission ticket purchased on one of the tours of the “The Mile Guides” program will exceptionally be valid to obtain a reduction at the other institutions on the days set aside for subsequent guided tours.
