The appointment of Lo Schermo dell’Arte at Palazzo Grassi is back, from September 28 to October 1: now in its seventh edition, the initiative directed by Silvia Lucchesi presents anexclusive selection of films, taken from the twelfth edition of the Florentine review dedicated to the relationship between cinema and contemporary art. In four days, nine films made by leading international video-artists and filmmakers will be shown.
It starts on Monday, September 28 at 6:30 p.m. with Alessandra Galletta’s documentary entitled Ettore Spalletti (Italy, 2019, 89’), dedicated to the recently deceased master. The work intends to be a precious testimony of the life and activity of an artist far from the clamors of the stages, who left a fundamental contribution to contemporary art thanks to his investigation of light and color, both in painting and sculpture. This will be followed at 8:15 p.m. by a screening of Jeremy Deller’s Putin’s Happy (UK, 2019, 40’), a film about the xenophobic instances, isolationism and patriotism that fueled Britain’s choice to leave the European Union.
Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m., is continued with Jill Magid’s The Proposal (U.S., 2018, 82’), which aims to trace the complex story of the realization of a project by the filmmaker that was supposed to flow into the exhibition dedicated to Mexican architect Luis Barragàn. At 8:10 p.m. then the film dedicated to Swedish artist and mystic Hilma Af Klint (1862 - 1944), among the first artists to introduce abstraction in painting in the early 20th century. Beyond the Visible. Hilma af Klint, this is the title of Halina Dyrschka’s film (Germany, 2019, 93’), aims to restore visibility to a forgotten artist, despite the very prominent role she played in the historical artistic evolution, for the first time told through film fiction.
On Wednesday, September 30, the festival continues with a film dedicated to the production of artist Olafur Eliasson (1967), entitled Olafur Eliasson: Miracles of Rare Device by Alan Yentob (UK, 2019, 61’). The film starts from the preparation of his new solo exhibition, Real Life, at the Tate Modern. From 7:45 p.m., the protagonist will be the artistic duo Masbedo, with the film Welcome Palermo (Italy, 2018-2019, 75’): it is the formal and narrative evolution of the project Videomobile, the articulated multichannel installation dedicated to the relationship between Palermo and cinema and conceived by the artists in 2018 on the occasion of Manifesta 12 Palermo.
On Thursday, Oct. 1, the film festival concludes with three titles. At 6:30 p.m., the video work of the British collective, nominee for the 2018 Turner Prize, Forensic Architecture represented by the screening of Triple-Chaser (UK, 2019, 11’), a work named after a type of grenade containing tear gas. The film is based on the search for grenades from the analysis of a large number of online images, conducted through special digital technology.
The second title, Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s Walled Unwalled (Germany, Lebanon, 2018, 21’), is a video-performance made in Berlin at the former East German radio station that questions how sound is perceived by the human ear when the listener is beyond a physical barrier. To make it, the artist, among four 2019 Turner Prize winners, analyzes three famous court cases, including the notorious one of athlete Oscar Pistorius
The last film on the program is Barbara Rubin and the Exploding NY Underground by Chuck Smith (United States, 2018, 78’), which aims to bring to light the human and professional story of the American artist, filmmaker and performer Barbara Rubin (1945 - 1980), through an epistolary fund preserved by her friend and filmmaker Jonas Mekas.
Screenings will be in original language, with Italian subtitles.
