Tuscany region at the forefront of promoting museum admission for people with Alzheimer's disease

Tuscany Region promotes 'Tuscan Museums for Alzheimer's' to encourage access to museums for people with Alzheimer's syndrome.

Tuscan Museums for Alzheimer ’s is the initiative that promotes museum admission for people with Alzheimer’s disease. It first started in the museums of Empolese Valdelsa with a project curated by the Benozzo Gozzoli Museum in Castelfiorentino and fully promoted and coordinated by the Museo Diffuso Empolese Valdelsa and theUnione dei Comuni Circondario dellEmpolese Valdelsa (as part of this project, twenty meetings were held at various museums in the area), the initiative, carried out by the Region in collaboration with museums in almost all the provinces of Tuscany (only Lucca and Massa-Carrara are missing from the roll call), provides experts to guide people with this degenerative disease and their carers and tours designed especially for them.

Councillor for Culture and Vice President of the Region Monica Barni comments, “Art and culture are for everyone, and it is right that everyone can enjoy them. Even those people who suffer from a degenerative disease that limits them greatly, such as Alzheimer’s, and their family members and companions, who would never venture into the halls of a museum in the company of their relative. The project we have developed is aimed precisely at them, and we hope that as many people as possible will enjoy it. Museums can also contribute to making society more dementia friendly.”

Several museums throughout the region have joined the initiative. To find out the dates of the visits that are part of the project (reservations are required), we refer you to the website: http://www.regione.toscana.it/-/musei-toscani-per-l-alzheimer. The report of the project that started instead in the Empolese-Valdelsa museums is documented at museiperlalzheimer.com.
