Tours and workshops in Tuscany's Medici villas and gardens: this summer's rich program

June through September sees the return of "The Gardens of Bizzarria," the long-awaited program of tours and workshops for adults and families to discover Tuscany's Medici villas and gardens.

Once again this summer, I giardini della Bizzarria, the long-awaited program of visits and workshops for adults and families by the Regional Museums Directorate of Tuscany supported by Unicoop Firenze, is back, with the aim of helping people discover the history and collections preserved in the Medici villas and gardens under its jurisdiction.

The Medici Villas and Gardens of Cerreto Guidi, Petraia and Castello, together with Stazione Utopia, will therefore offer a series of tours led by exceptional guides, theatricalized visits and narrative and sensory paths for children among history, art, architecture, landscape and botany. From June to September 2022, a series of free events will give visitors the opportunity to get to know an articulated territory, where art mixes with the scent of flowers and nature.

There are numerous new features in this fourth edition. Thanks to the collaboration with theAccademia della Crusca, a visit to discover the most evocative environments of the Villa di Castello is planned. In addition, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture’s MUSST3# program, it will be possible to participate in thematic visits dedicated to OPUS Heritage of Knowledge and observe porcelain, furniture, fixtures, wallpaper, engineering masterpieces and everyday objects, precious witnesses of a refined manufacturing system of which the villas were the heart. In September, it will also be possible to experience for an entire day some of the artistic processes, including decoration and woodworking, observing up close in the company of master craftsmen the precious artifacts preserved in the Medici Villa La Petraia.

The Medici villas and gardens represent a true microcosm around which court life revolved. In these places the Medici first, the Lorraine and the Savoy later, devoted themselves to their passions: art and patronage, life in nature and hunting, conviviality and the decorative arts. The villas were also places of engineering and botanical experimentation, some of which are still preserved in the Castle Villa Garden, such as the famous bizzarria, a variety of citrus dating back to the 17th century, a cross between bitter orange, lemon and citron.
