The Center for American Studies (CSA) in Rome is organizing a discussion on the occasion of the presentation of Attilio Albergoni’s book, The War of Art, on the monuments in Palermo damaged during World War II and restored since 1943 thanks to AMGOT (Allied Military Government of Occupied Territories).
The event will be held on Monday, February 11, at 5:30 p.m. in Rome, at the CSA headquarters at Via Michelangelo Caetani, 32. Joining the author of the volume will be Professor Gabriella Gribaudi, professor at the University of Naples Federico II, and Maria Gabriella Pasqualini, a university lecturer and expert in the history of the Information and Security Services. Andrea Borgnino, Rai Radio Techetè, will moderate the debate, while opening remarks will be given by Daniele Fiorentino, professor at the University of Roma Tre and a member of the Center’s board.
In order to participate in the event, it is necessary to write to event@centrostudiamericani.org. This is the first 2019 event of the Cultural Bridge between Italy and the United States, which will be developed during the course of the year and will see the participation of protagonists of the national and international debate.
In 2017-2018 in Palermo there had been a photographic and documentary exhibition of the same name, “The War of Art,” curated by Albergoni himself and linked to his book of the same name, which is now being presented in Rome(here an in-depth article written for Finestre sull’Arte by Michele Cuppone: the article traced, with new archival discoveries, some events related to Caravaggio ’s Nativity during World War II and in the years immediately following; it also recalled the little-known figure of Filippo Meli, the priest who took care of the painting until 1965. The painting was later stolen in 1969 and was never recovered).
