Also back for this October 2017 is the Rolli Days, the event that on two occasions a year opens the doors of Genoa’s historic palaces to the public, including the magnificent Palazzi dei Rolli, the sumptuous aristocratic residences that in the Republic of Genoa were meant to host the illustrious guests passing through(here an in-depth look at the true history of the Palazzi dei Rolli). This year’s Rolli Days will be held on October 14 and 15, and there will be two main themes for the two-day event:"Genoese Benefactors and Patrons" and"A protagonist of 17th-century Genoese painting: Domenico Piola."
The works created by Genoese benefactors will thus be the focus of the exhibition: one will be able to visit in particular the complex of theAlbergo dei Poveri, the structure commissioned by the Republic of Genoa in the mid-17th century as a place of assistance for the needy (now a university campus), and its art collections, as well as theArchives of the Magistrate of Mercy, the entity created in 1419, by which the Republic of Genoa and the Diocese managed bequests and charities destined for the needy, orphans and the sick.
Then we delve deeper into one of the most illustrious artists in Genoa’s history, Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1628 - 1703): Palazzo Nicolosio Lomellino and the Strada Nuova Museums are hosting the first monographic exhibition dedicated to him(details here), entitled Domenico Piola 1628-1703. Paths of Baroque Painting. But that’s not all, because Piola’s works are “scattered” throughout the city: so there will be a special itinerary among the artist’s works preserved in the city’s museums, churches and palaces (the dedicatedbrochure provides directions on where to find Domenico Piola’s works in Genoa).
Among the novelties, not to be missed is the display of all the rolli, or volumes in which the Palazzi that were to host the illustrious guests staying in Genoa were recorded. In the former headquarters of the Genoa State Archives, at the Palazzetto Criminale on Via Tommaso Reggio, it will therefore be possible to see the five rolli from 1576, 1588, 1599, 1614 and 1664.
