The third season of I Medici, the successful RAI television series dedicated to the events of the great Florentine family and written by Frank Spotnitz and directed by Christian Dugay, is about to start. The first episode of the new season (entitled In the Name of the Family) will air Monday, Dec. 2, in prime time on Rai 1. The second episode, however, will be available as early as the following evening, Tuesday, Dec. 3.
The second season, which captivated millions of viewers in the fall of 2018, had ended with the Pazzi conspiracy, the end of Giuliano de’ Medici at the hands of conspirators, and the victory of Lorenzo the Magnificent. From these events begins the third season, which begins with a Magnifico (played, as in the second season, by British actor Daniel Sharman) seeking revenge for the killing of his brother. The cast will still include Bradley James (who will play Giuliano de’ Medici but only, of course, in flashbacks), Synnøve Karlsen (Clarice Orsini, the Magnifico’s wife), Alessandra Mastronardi (Lucrezia Donati, the Magnifico’s mistress), Aurora Ruffino (Bianca de’ Medici, Lorenzo’s sister and wife of Guglielmo de’ Pazzi), Charlie Vickers (Guglielmo de’ Pazzi) and Sebastian de Souza(Sandro Botticelli).
New entries include Neri Marcorè, who will be Pope Innocent VIII, successor to Sixtus IV who was played by Raoul Bova in the second season, Francesco Montanari who will play Girolamo Savonarola, and Stephen Hagan who will instead lend his face to Leonardo da Vinci. The series is produced by Luca and Matilde Bernabei for Lux Vide in collaboration with Rai Fiction.
