The Fourth Estate as it has never been seen before: from February 2 to 4, the Museo del Novecento in Milan, the institution that preserves the great masterpiece by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo (Volpedo, 1868 - 1907), will host the initiative Quarto Stato: beyond the visible, as part of which people will be able to discover all the details and background of Pellizza da Volpedo’s work thanks to augmented reality. The public will only need their phone or tablet to enjoy the special content.
The initiative is realized by SMART - Augmented Culture in collaboration with the Museo del Novecento: the goal is to make the work “live” up close, in a dynamic and unprecedented way. “As part of the discussion on culture and new technologies,” reads a note from SMART, “we have chosen with the Museum a highly topical work that will be possible to know and look at with different eyes. The painting does not depict an indistinct mass of people, but real individuals and individual lives brought together by Pellizza da Volpedo in a group that precisely because it is so real has been able to become the powerful icon that we have all known since 1902: the working class and its rights, the social struggle, a people that advances proudly and compactly facing society and contemporaneity.”
Fourth Estate: Beyond the Visible is held during the opening hours of the Museo del Novecento: Friday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb. 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The museum will also be open to visitors free of charge on Sunday. The Fourth Estate, located at the entrance to the museum’s exhibition route, on the other hand, can always be visited for free. The event is part of the Novecento Italiano initiatives, the billboard of art, cinema and theater that the City of Milan is dedicating throughout 2018 to 20th century Italian culture. The hashtags to use to share the event are #SocialArt and #Museodel900.
