Once again this year, the Floor of Siena Cathedral will be uncovered: an appointment from August 18 to October 27, 2019, a period during which the masterpiece, made entirely in marble commesso and the result of five hundred years of artistic expression, will be on public display. The event is entitled As in Heaven, So on Earth. From the Gate to the City of Heaven to the Floor and is complemented by the Opera della Metropolitana di Siena’s other initiatives, first and foremost the morning ascents to the facade of the Duomo Nuovo, which run through Sept. 8, 2019.
The floor, whose scenes were created by many of the greatest artists of the 15th and 16th centuries and beyond (from Pinturicchio to Matteo di Giovanni, from Domenico Beccafumi to Neroccio di Bartolomeo), was described by Vasari as the “most beautiful [...] grande e magnifico pavimento che mai fusse stato fatto.” The hours to see it coincide with the opening hours of the Cathedral’s monumental area: Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Last admission half an hour earlier. Variations in hours during religious celebrations. For all info you can consult the website of the Opera della Metropolitana di Siena.
