For the first time since its first edition, the Turin International Book Fair, among the most important publishing events in Italy, will be live streamed. The Covid-19 health emergency did not make the usual event possible, but the Book Fair has reacted by thinking of aspecial edition for the realization of which an appeal has been launched to national and international guests dealing with literature, science, historical studies, philosophy, music, and cinema.
On Thursday, May 14, this special edition, Salone EXTRA, will open on the Salone website, and the public will be able to follow a rich program of events in live streaming, interacting with guests, until Sunday, May 17, 2020: four days of free events accessible to all. On the Salone’s social channels Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, all events will be narrated live.
On Friday, May 15, various meetings will be broadcast live on Rai Radio3, and Rai will be present, also in this extraordinary edition, as Main Media partner to give its contribution to Italian publishing: from Rai Ragazzi to Rai Libri, from Rai1 to Rai Cultura, from RaiNews24 to Tgr will tell the general public about the events of the Turin show, with ample space also on Rai social channels.
The full program will be available in the coming days at salonelibro.it.
This extraordinary edition of the Salon is dedicated to the victims of the virus, their relatives, medical and paramedical personnel, for a moment of reflection and meeting dedicated to the future. Title of the XXXIII edition is Other forms of life to evoke the near future.
The path of online activities will accompany the large Salone community to the fall edition: editorial presentations, in-depth cultural columns and new formats for the digital storytelling of the world of books and culture.
Nicola Lagioia, Artistic Director of the Book Fair, says: “In pain is awareness, in love is knowledge. A few days ago, in one of the darkest, most confusing and painful hours for our country and the whole world, the working group of the Turin International Book Fair had a dream: to bring together some of the best minds on the planet to think together about what is happening. We began to reach out at first timidly, then with increasing conviction: the responses were enthusiastic. Ours, we realized, was a shared dream. So, from May 14 to 17, we will once again gather around the hearth of the Salon. In the name of solidarity, sharing, friendship. If we set off that ancient spark in us, we will know a lot more, and then we will also know that we have a future.”
MiBACT Minister Dario Franceschini also commented, “The Turin International Book Fair is a fundamental point of reference for culture and publishing, both national and international. It has been so in the past and will be so in the future. We are going through a difficult and unprecedented time, and the organizers’ initiative to involve, in a preview, some of the most interesting voices on the cultural scene represents a valuable opportunity for reflection and sharing.”
Finally, Turin Mayor Chiara Appendino and Culture Councillor Francesca Leon added, “With great pleasure we welcome the extraordinary edition organized by the Book Fair in online mode. If the health emergency is changing some of our habits, it certainly cannot erase the fundamental values of our community, including the culture of sharing and confrontation. The Book Fair is and will remain a cultural heritage of our city, independent of the mode and form in which it will take place, and we thank Director Lagioia with his entire team for thecommitment in producing an extraordinary edition full of stimuli and prestigious participations, a demonstration of the fact that the Salone represents a living and dynamic entity throughout the year and not only in the purely fair moment.”
