The Arch of Palmyra revives in Florence for the first G7 of culture

The Arch of Palmyra will be revived in Florence from March 27 to April 27: the life-size 3D reconstruction will be on display in Piazza della Signoria.

TheArch of Palmyra, barbarously destroyed by Isis in October 2015, will be revived from March 27 to April 27 in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria on the occasion of the first G7 of culture. In fact, next to Bartolomeo Ammannati’s Fountain of Neptune, the faithful reconstruction of the arch created thanks to the work of Torart, the Carrara-based company led by Giacomo Massari and Filippo Tincolini, which, using the most modern three-dimensional modeling tools, in 2016 succeeded in the feat of bringing the symbolic monument of the ancient city of Syria back to life. In the following video you can watch the stages of the work’s creation:

The Arch of Palmyra was built between the second and third centuries AD and dedicated to Septimius Severus, so much so that it is also known as the Arch of Septimius Severus. This is not the first time that Torart’s life-size reconstruction has been displayed to the public: it had already been unveiled in London’s Trafalgar Square in April 2016 and at City Hall Park in New York last summer.

The display of the arch of Palmyra reconstructed by Torart will be one of the main events of the G7 of Culture, the summit of the culture ministers of the world’s seven major powers, which will take place in Florence on March 30 and 31: desired by Cultural Heritage Minister Dario Franceschini, the G7 of Culture will focus on the protection of cultural heritage, the fight against illicit trafficking of goods, and culture as a tool for dialogue between peoples. On the sidelines of the G7 of Culture, several events and conferences are planned in the city.
