On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the publication of The Leopard, a masterpiece by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa that is among the most beloved novels of the 20th century, the Dante Alighieri Society is paying tribute to the literary work with a meeting to be held on Monday, May 27, 2019, starting at 10 a.m. at Palazzo Firenze in Rome.
Participating in the roundtable discussion will be Dante president Andrea Riccardi, Gioacchino Lanza Tomasi (adopted son and heir of Tomasi di Lampedusa), Carine Vanni Calvello Mantegna di Gangi(owner of Palazzo Valguarnera di Gangi, where scenes from Luchino Visconti’s film Il Gattopardo were filmed), Giulio Ferroni (literary critic and historian of Italian literature) and Don Angelo Romano (Rector of the Basilica of San Bartolomeo all’Isola Tiberina).
The meeting will analyze why the novel(Strega Prize in 1959) has become one of the milestones of Italian and world literature, narrating the transformations that took place in life and society in Sicily during the Risorgimento. Also memorable was its 1963 film adaptation, directed by Luchino Visconti and starring Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon.
Speakers will include:
Gioacchino Lanza Tomasi, musicologist and adopted son of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa;
Giulio Ferroni, professor of Italian Literature at the University of Rome “La Sapienza.”
Carine Vanni Calvello Mantegna di Gangi, owner of Palazzo Valguarnera di Gangi (set of the film “The Leopard” by Luchino Visconti); and will moderate Angelo Romano, rector of the Basilica of San Bartolomeo all’Isola Tiberina.
