The fifth edition of Siena International Photo Awards, a festival dedicated to international photography featuring photographers from 161 countries around the world, will be held from October 26 to December 1, 2019. A rich calendar of events, workshops and photo tours is planned again this year, and there will be nine exhibitions hosted in the most exclusive venues in the area.
The traditional award ceremony will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m. on the stage of the Teatro dei Rinnovati: a qualified jury has selected the winners in each category of the competition (creative, photojournalism, travel photography, people and portraits, nature, wildlife, architecture, sports, Jump for Joy, storyboard and Short Documentary Film) and the overall winner will be decreed, who will be awarded the title of SIPA Photographer of the Year.
Until Dec. 1, the exhibition Imagine all the people sharing all the world will be hosted in the spaces of the former Stellino distillery, bringing together in a collective the photos from the Siena International Photography Awards: 114 shots from 99 photographers of 39 nationalities divided by themes. Also on view until December are Above us only sky, a selection of the most beautiful photos awarded at the Drone Photo Awards, Plastic Apocalypse, Randy Olson’s environmentalist challenge against pollution. Also on display are Philip Coburn ’s shots of the ISAF mission related to the recapture of Musa Qala, Afghanistan, and Constanza Portnoy’s photo project Life force: what love can save.
In Grandma Divers, Belgian photojournalist Alain Schroeder tells the story of the community of Korean female fishermen, referred to as the last mermaids because they have been dedicated since 434 A.D. to the activity of free diving in search of seaweed, seafood and octopus; Prisoners of War: Male on Male Sexual Assault in America’s Military by Mary F.Calvert focuses instead on sexual abuse and violence within the U.S. military. Also, Blue Karma, an exhibition dedicated to the underwater world that brings together some of the most beautiful images by Sienese photographer Filippo Borghi, for years considered one of the leading international interpreters of marine photography, and finally, the collection of Antonello Palazzolo, a multifaceted artist, pianist, architect and photographer, creator of the permanent installation Spazi Sonori.
The festival is promoted by the cultural association Art Photo Travel in collaboration with the Municipality of Siena, under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, University of Siena, Tuscany Region, Chamber of Commerce of Siena and Arezzo.
