Siena, extraordinary uncovering of the cathedral's monumental floor this summer, with a new light

In Siena this summer, until Oct. 28, 2018, an extraordinary uncovering of the floor of Siena Cathedral, with a new light.

Held from June 27 to July 31 and then again from August 18 to October 28, 2018, the extraordinary uncovering of the floor of Siena Cathedral, one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian religious art. In lucem veniet. The floor of the Duomo shines with new light is the title that has been given to the extraordinary uncovering that will allow the public to see the work with a new mode of interpretation that illuminates the inlays of the marble carpet with unprecedented chromatic effects. The floor will literally shine with a new light thanks to a project by Opera Civita, which, together with theOpera della Metropolitana di Siena, has contributed to the enhancement of the floor and to make it even better known in the world (in the 19th century it had been called “The Wonder of Siena,” attesting to the appreciation the work enjoyed even outside Italian borders.

The inauguration, on June 27, takes place on the occasion of the seventh edition of Lux in nocte, extraordinary evening openings of the monuments of the cathedral complex: for the occasion, the uncovering of the floor will be introduced by a luminous work by Marco Nereo Rotelli who, with his stylistic code, capable of making the word visible as a figure, has devised a visual path where art, music writing interact giving voice to the facade. Rotelli will create an interrelation between art and the different disciplines of knowledge, also thanks to an interactive overhead projector. The light installation intends to render the facade and interior of the cathedral with a light path in its own unique way. “With light,” the presentation reads, “it is possible to offer a new motivation to the visitor. One goes to look at the floor of the cathedral from all over the world having cognizance of being in front of something unique.” The words of Sibilla Cumea, who in one of the floor’s marble inlays utters the phrase In lucem veniet (“it will come to light”), “have extended senses and bring into real relation the interior to the exterior. The wonder of Siena Cathedral will thus come alive for one night as a living metaphor, a magical page of poetry that induces beauty.”
