Sammezzano Castle wins FAI Places of the Heart 2016: here are the rankings

It is the very famous Sammezzano Castle, the eclectic residence built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries in Leccio di Reggello in Tuscany, the winner of the eighth edition (2016) of the “I Luoghi del Cuore” census organized by FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano, dedicated this year to the memory of Khaled al-Asaad, the archaeologist barbarously murdered by ISIS in August 2015. The victory of Sammezzano Castle was also possible thanks to an active committee that set itself the goal of making the place leap to the top of the ranking in order to recover it from its current state of neglect: as per the census regulations, in fact, FAI will pay contributions for the recovery of the places that placed in the first three places of the ranking (50.000 for the first, 40,000 for the second and 30,000 for the third) and will grant a prize of 7,000 euros to the places that have received more than 100,000 votes and 4,000 to those that have received more than 50,000.
