At 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 30, the inauguration party for the Macro Asilo project, conceived by curator Giorgio de Finis, was held in Rome(a presentation of the project here, and our interview with the curator here). As many as 8,000 people were present at the ceremony for the project, which, for the next 15 months, aims to make the Macro a more hospitable museum, with a ticketless entrance (admission is free), a new layout created by architect Carmelo Baglivo and exhibition spaces that can be walked through freely.
Present at the inauguration was Luca Bergamo, deputy mayor of Rome with responsibility for Cultural Growth, who said, “The Macro becomes at this moment, and for many months, a place where this exercise between contemporary art and society and people becomes concrete and also becomes an increase in everyone’s knowledge. With the Macro we want to give life to a way of making art, involving people: a novelty for Rome. Of course, in this there is also an artistic practice, there are workshops in which artists produce art also together with those who go to visit them, there is not instead the construction of a classic collection because this function at this moment is carried out in other places in the city. After so many changes, today there is a very strong idea. I see many people interested in the project, they came here today to find out about it. The basic idea is this: those who are artists have a special gift, they can create associations or read in space and time things that normally we mere mortals cannot see. But this gives artists a responsibility: that of being integrally part of a society.”
In addition to ticket booths, calendars have also been abolished, as the new Macro intends to organize new events, meetings, workshops, installations and performances every day. Macro Asylum will operate from October 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019: open daily, except Mondays (closing day), from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays until 10 p.m. To learn more you can visit the museum’s official website.
