Rome, all set for big demonstration for cultural work on Oct. 6

Rome, Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018 will see the largest ever Manifestation for Culture and Labor for cultural work.

Preparations continue in Rome for the big Manifestation for Culture and Labor scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2018: it will be the largest demonstration ever dedicated to cultural work. For once, all workers in the sector (archaeologists, historians, art historians, archivists, librarians, music workers, communication workers, research workers) will be united to ask the government for investments in the sector that can bring spending on culture in Italy to 1.5 percent of GDP (in line with other European countries), more public funding for entertainment, recognition of the cultural heritage professions, respect for national contracts, promotion of a new national qualification system for tour guides, and the hiring of at least 3.500 workers by 2020 in the ranks of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, expansion of employment forecasts in local authorities and public cultural institutions, a law regulating cultural volunteering, and reform of the Ronchey law on outsourcing.

The organizers have therefore launched an appeal to all cultural workers: “On October 6 in Rome we are calling together all our colleagues, all citizens and in general all those who care about the cultural and artistic heritage of this country, for the first MANIFESTATION FOR CULTURE AND WORK. We are professionals and workers in the performing arts and cultural heritage: we are actors, archaeologists, anthropologists, librarians, orchestra professors, choir artists, diagnosticians, authors, museum workers, television workers, archivists, dancers, technicians, art historians, directors, musicians, editors and much more. We are those who, in various capacities, deal with cultural heritage. All together we have confronted the critical issues of our professions, the issues of culture and artistic heritage, and have come to build this mobilization, for our future and that of the whole country, based on what Article 9 of the Constitution states: ’The Republic promotes the development of culture and scientific and technical research. It protects the landscape and the historical and artistic heritage of the Nation.’ We believe it is more necessary than ever to restore culture to a central role in our country so that it can be a true instrument of individual and collective growth, emancipation, and freedom. Cultural heritage is the place of fundamental human rights, a space that cannot bend to the logic of profit, because it must serve citizens, ’not clients, spectators or subjects.’”

The demonstration will start at 10 a.m. from Porta San Paolo (Piramide stop of Metro B), near the Pyramid of Caius Cestius. The procession will then move at 11 a.m. crossing Via Mamorata, Ponte Sublicio and Piazza San Francesco d’Assisi to arrive in Piazza Mastai where speeches by representatives of the promoting realities will alternate in addition to moments of assembly and music. Closing time is scheduled for 4 p.m. For those who are unable to reach Rome by their own means or still wish to share the journey, courier departures from all over Italy are planned, for which a symbolic contribution is required.
