Rome, a nighttime walk through Caesar's Forum accompanied by the narrative voice of Piero Angela

Back again this year is the Journey to Caesar's Forum, the multimedia show that aims to narrate and bring to life the scenic archaeological area at night, accompanied by Piero Angela's narration voice.

Back again this year, from May 22 to Sept. 22, 2024, is the Viaggio nel Foro di Cesare (Journey through Caesar’s Forum), the multimedia show that aims to narrate and bring to life the scenic archaeological area, accompanied by the narrative voice of Piero Angela. Promoted by Roma Capitale, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, the project is produced and organized by Zètema Progetto Cultura, and benefits from the conception and curation of the unforgettable Piero Angela and Paco Lanciano and the same Scientific Direction of the Sovrintendenza Capitolina.

Visitors will therefore be able to return to enjoy an exciting performance that is at the same time rich in information and historical and scientific rigor, accompanied not only by Piero Angela’s narrative voice, but also by the vision of films, projections and videomapping that reconstruct the current archaeological area as it was inancient Rome.

The show, with the possibility of listening to the narration in audio headphones in eight languages (Italian, English, French, Russian, Spanish, German, Chinese and Japanese), unfolds along a four-stage itinerary, lasting a total of about 50 minutes, including travel time.

Tickets can be pre-purchased online at www.viaggioneifori.it or directly on site and at Tourist Infopoints located in different parts of the city. For Roma MIC card holders, there is a reduced entrance fee. The show is also part of the Roma Pass circuit.

Journey through the Forum of Caesar

The show inside Caesar’s Forum is itinerant. Entrance is from Piazza della Madonna di Loreto, near Trajan’s Column. Through a staircase one descends to the level of the archaeological area where spectators will be provided with audio headsets. As a group, one will then cross the Forum of Trajan by walking along a special footbridge and through a tunnel that passes under Via dei Fori Imperiali, one will reach the Forum of Caesar with the remains of the Temple of Venus. It will continue to the Roman Curia and from there to the exit on Via dei Fori Imperiali, at the level of Largo Corrado Ricci.

Piero Angela’s narrative, accompanied by reconstructions and films, starts from the story of the excavations carried out between 1924 and 1932 for the construction of the then Via dell’Impero (today Via dei Fori Imperiali), when a host of 1,500 people, including masons, laborers and laborers, were mobilized for an unprecedented intervention: razing an entire neighborhood to the ground and digging deep into the entire area to reach the level of ancient Rome.

The narrative then gets to the heart of the story, starting with the remains of the majestic Temple of Venus, built by Julius Caesar after his victory over Pompey, and bringing to life the excitement of what life must have been like at the time in Rome, when officials, plebeians, soldiers, matrons, consuls and senators strolled under the porticoes of the Forum. Among the remaining colonnades will reappear to the viewer the tabernae of the time, that is, the offices and stores of the Forum and, among them, the store of a nummulario, a kind of exchange office of the time. At that time there was also a large public toilet of which curious remains have remained.

To build his Forum, Julius Caesar had an entire neighborhood expropriated and demolished at a total expense of 100 million aurei, the equivalent of at least 300 million euros. Next to the Forum he had the Curia, the new seat of the Roman Senate, built, a building that still exists today and that through a virtual reconstruction made with projections on its facade, it will be possible to see again how it looked at the time, both outside and inside.

In those years, while Rome’s power was growing by leaps and bounds, the Senate was greatly weakened, and it was in this situation of internal crisis that Caesar was able to obtain exceptional and perpetual powers. Thanks to Piero Angela’s account, we will get a closer look at this intelligent and ambitious man, idolized by some, hated and feared by others.
